400 lux

happy design conncept

2020

this is my preliminary plate submission for the first half of the semester on Industrial Design 5, where we studied happy designs and gave our own take in it.

In this case, my take on happiness is as bright as the lux of the rising sun. It should be as energizing, and vibrant as the warmth of the 7 AM sun, thus, the name 400 LUX.

i got the name from the song “400 Lux” by the artist ‘Lorde’. The song refers to how meaningful and impactful simple things could be when you do it with someone you love. Activities like driving, drinking juices, buying something at the store in the middle of the night.. things that supply her with memories to keep and nostalgia. Everything feels better when she’s with the person she loves most, and when she does everything with that person it feels bright and warm, like 400 Lux.

I wanted to channel that same feeling in this design.

400 LUX is a toaster originally inspired by the shape of the genie and the starfish - how it swims across the floor of the sea, and how it contracts its body to move. The colors were then inspired by the things i associate happiness with. The hues and colors we usually see in the morning or in the afternoon during the setting and rising of the sun. Wes Anderson’s nostalgic bright and pastel color palettes in his films also inspired this composition.
